CHAPTER NINETEEN

KIRA

Each step is painful. Each time I lift my leg, my stomach turns. What did Nicco do to me? My heart hammers, and my brain feels foggy. I reach Jason’s room, and I cover my mouth with my hands. Nicco killed Lev. His anger was like something I’ve never seen before. He was livid over seeing Jason’s affection toward me.

I squeeze my eyes tight as I try to piece everything together.

“He isn’t signing the papers because of you.” Nicco moves closer to me. “What did you say to him?”

I try to keep my shoulders relaxed, even as they want to rise like they can protect me. His hands curl around his cane, and I fear he might strike me. “Nothing, I swear.”

“He had agreed to sign them,” Nicco continues. He’s watching me closely.

“I swear, Nicco, I have no idea.” The door is closed, the sound of the wedding on the other side. It’s the sound of people, the sound of safety. Nicco turned the lock in the door the moment he had pulled me in here with a friendly smile but a warning in his gaze.

I had considered going after Jason, but that would be silly behavior. “You were kissing him. Dancing with him.”

My heart rate spikes. “It’s all for show. We should get back to the wedding.” I take a step toward the door. Nicco flicks out his cane, cutting off my path.

“Are you fucking him?” His mouth twists with uncontained rage.

“Of course not.” I whisper the truth, yet my mind goes to Jason, pleasuring me.

“Why get rid of Lev? You didn’t want him to report to me?” he quizzes, still holding the cane in place.

“Ask Lev yourself. I never dismissed him.”

Nicco grins, and my skin crawls. “I know. I did ask him before I killed him.”

Blood rushes to my feet. Lev is dead. Why?

“He was meant to stay with you, and he didn’t,” Nicco answers my unspoken question. “Where is Angel?” Nicco drops the cane, but I’m under no illusion that I can leave, so I stay rooted to the spot.

“I don’t know.”

He snorts. “Lies.” Nicco eradicates the space between us. His free hand grips my shoulder. “I will find her and kill her too. I should have done it the first time.”

I pull out of his hold. “You will not harm her.”

“Oh, dear sister. You have forgotten your place.” Nicco reaches out and touches my hair.

My bones grow heavier when my brother glances at my lips.

“Nicco,” I plead, hoping he’ll come to his senses.

My plea only angers him. “Did you sleep with him?”

I shake my head as my vision wavers. I’m thinking of Lev; I’m thinking of Angel. How could he be so callous?

I don’t have time to react before Nicco shoves me. I’m sailing backward, not prepared, and I hit the ground hard. The back of my head takes the brunt, and the room falls into darkness. I get one final look at Nicco as he leans down beside me before everything disappears.

When I woke, I was alone in the room.
